Poll results are in!
On the Fediverse I posted a poll asking people to weigh in on XFCE vs Mate desktop environments.
I knew XFCE was well regarded, but I wasn’t it expecting to win by this much!
Maybe that’s because I really haven’t spent that much time with it and I hadn’t tried customizing it for myself.
My own XFCE customization on Void Linux
After seeing this, I installed Void Linux with XFCE on a ThinkCentre Tiny. I got to experimenting with removing panels, setting up workspaces and keyboard shortcuts.
Here’s a video of me showing off XFCE with ‘cortile’, a program that adding Tiling Window Manager features to most any X11 based desktop environment:
Here’s another video without ‘cortile’ tiling features and showing keyboard shortcuts in XFCE and ‘rofi’, a launcher and window switching program:
I do like Void Linux. The concept of a more stable rolling release distro is well done with Void.
In the past, it was my habit to pick something and stay with it for a long time. I’m pushing myself outside my comfort zone by “distro hopping” a bit to learn more and get a broader experience with the options available.
I plan on revisiting PClinuxOS and hopefully installing Slackware for the first time.
